Do I Need TOEFL or IELTS For My Admissions Success?
If you’re planning to study abroad in 2025, there’s a good chance you’ve come across the TOEFL® and IELTS™ exams. Both are widely accepted tests of English language proficiency.
However, you are probably still trying to figure out the BIG Question: Which One is RIGHT FOR ME?
In this post, we will explore the key differences between the two tests and help you decide which to take based on your goals, comfort level, and where you plan to study.
What is The TOEFL® Exam?
The TOEFL® (Test of English as a Foreign Language) is a standardized exam designed to measure the English language proficiency of non-native speakers who want to study at universities in English-speaking countries.
Key Facts About TOEFL®:
Administered by: ETS (Educational Testing Service)
Purpose: Academic English proficiency for university study
Format: Fully computer-based (internet-based test, or iBT)
Sections: Reading, Listening, Speaking, and Writing
Score Range: 0–120 total (each section scored 0–30)
Test Length: Approximately 2 hours
What Makes TOEFL® Unique?
The TOEFL® iBT is taken entirely on a computer. This includes the Speaking section, which is recorded and assessed by both A.I. and human raters — meaning no face-to-face speaking component.
It’s widely accepted by more than 11,000 universities in over 150 countries, especially in the United States and Canada. The test also uses academic-style English, focusing on skills used in university settings such as note-taking during lectures and reading complex texts.
Choose TOEFL® if:
You’re applying to a U.S. or Canadian university
You’re more comfortable speaking into a microphone rather than speaking live
You prefer multiple-choice style questions
You’re familiar with taking tests on a computer
What Is The IELTS Exam?
The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is another globally recognized English language proficiency test used for study, work, and migration purposes.
Key Facts About IELTS™:
Administered by: British Council, IDP: IELTS Australia, and Cambridge English
Purpose: Academic and general training pathways
Format: Computer-based or paper-based
Sections: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking
Score Range: 0–9 band scale (with half-band increments)
Test Length: About 2 hours and 45 minutes
What Makes IELTS™ Unique?
IELTS includes a face-to-face speaking test with a trained examiner, which some students find more natural and others find more intimidating.
The Listening section includes a variety of accents, such as British, Australian, and New Zealand English.
IELTS™ is commonly accepted in the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and parts of Europe, as well as an increasing number of schools in the U.S. and Canada.
Choose IELTS™ if:
You’re applying to schools in the U.K., Australia, or Europe
You’re comfortable speaking in person with an examiner
You want to choose between paper and computer formats
You want a test that reflects global English usage
In the end, there is no one-size-fits-all answer — it depends on your goals, learning style, and the requirements of the schools you’re applying to. I also recommend that students start by taking practice exams for BOTH tests.
Considering that international students tend to apply worldwide, it’s worth exploring what both have to offer.
Until the next one,

Since 2014, I have been helping students navigate their semester away journey from the coastal areas of Spain to China and every place in between through (mostly free) online content and low-cost advising.
I hold two Master's degrees from two well-respected London-based universities and have experience working in the US, UK & and Italy.
In my spare time (what's that again?), I enjoy leisure travel city breaks, any snow-based activity, skeet shooting (not that greatly though!), and attempting to learn new languages.
